Production Problem

Re: Production Problem

Hi, i read your Biodiesel tutorial under it "Advance Biodiesel"- Electrostatic separation. My question is in the schematic diagram what is the secondary voltage? and what output do i need is it AC or DC?

Re: Production Problem

thanks, so the transformer is a step-up. i was confused because the link shows voltage doubler, voltage quadrupler and this is a pulsating DC voltage.
I try to make biodiesel using 30ml ethyl alcohol, heated 100ml wvo , 1g caustic soda. while pouring the heated wvo into the ethyl and caustic soda bubbles appear and the mixture turns to solid with some patrs in white color. i add 20ml of ethyl thinking lack of ethyl , reheat, stir and mixture turns back to liquid. set aside waiting what will happen. 2nd try 60ml of ethyl, 100ml wvo no heating, 1g caustic soda. same procedure. while pouring the wvo into the ethyl and caustic soda solution the ethyl looks not combining with the wvo even i stir slowly. you can see the separation on top the ethyl colorless and at the bottom wvo dark color. i stir more faster then the wvo and ethyl combined. but after stirring 1 or 2 minutes it turns into gel. i try to stir again some parts turns to white color. i removed the white color add 20ml ethyl and reheat, it go back to liquid. set aside for settling.

Re: Production Problem

Your making glop, (soap) instead of biodiesel.

1) Did you titrate your oil?...  too much caustic soda can cause your problem.
2) What is the purity of your ethyl alcohol? Using less than 99% pure ethyl alcohol can cause your problem.
3) Did you test your WVO for water? high water content of the oil can cause your problem,

Re: Production Problem

i did not tritrate my wvo because i cannot find the PH solution here in our country like phenolphthalein ,turmeric or phenol red i only find litmus paper and ph strips type i dont know if this one will work what do you think?the ethyl purity is also unknown. i use deodorized ethyl alcohol this is the one i used in making perfume. i did not test the wvo for water content, how to test it? is heating the wvo is not enough to removed water?thanks for the info. ragards.

Re: Production Problem

Click here to Test Your WVO for Water

turmeric is a spice you should be able to get at the food market.  If not, it is possible to make an indicator dye from the juice found in red cabbage leaves.

Your deodeorized ethyl alcohol should have some sort of label on it telling it's purity. If not the person selling it to you should be able to give you a purity. It must be at least 99% pure ethyl alcohol. The alcohols used to mix perfumes are usually not acceptable. If your in a Muslim country, you may not be able to get ethyl alcohol in the purity required. try a drug store if you have one nearby.

Re: Production Problem

My experiments with electrostatic separation (years ago) used a 7.5KV DC power supply. The glycerin/soap were attracted to the brass strip I hung in the PLASTIC barrel, sliding off into the depths of the barrel as I watched. It was amazing and rather scary. 7500 volts without protection should scare people. It's an advanced technique that I think needs to wait for a while. You need to learn basic (no pun intended) biodiesel processing first.
If you can't do titrations with phenolpthalein, then I see no other options to doing mini-batches. Let us know if you need help. We're here to do so.
Cheers,

Re: Production Problem

Thanks John O. Right now I think i need first to find the materials that i will need in making biodiesel. like methanol. i tried ethyl  but i think my ethyl is not pure enough that makes the mixtures solid or gel form. In replacement of phenolphthalein i will try to use Turmeric spice like what Rickdatech says.Any help suggestions send it to me and will be appreciated, again thanks
